When GRACE worked directly with residents of Dignity Village in 2020 to close the camp, we set out to establish a new best practice that prioritizes housing and the needs of camp residents. We are thrilled to announce that the Georgetown Journal on Poverty Law & Policy, the nation’s premier journal of poverty and social reform discourse, has published an article by Executive Director Jon DeCarmine and Board Attorney Joe Jackson describing this work so that other communities may learn from our experience. “A Tale of Two Tent Cities: The Critical Role of Housing Engagement in Addressing Homeless Encampments,” describes the ways GRACE engaged homeless campers to create a new managed campground that became the base of operations to house nearly 150 people when the original camp closed.
